Message to students

My research is about algorithms. Before I focused more on theoretical aspects, recently I get more satisfaction from algorithm engineering and practical applications (in particular, Bioinformatics). If you have a mathematical mind and like tackling challenging problems, you're of my type.

Research topics/projects

Energy-efficient scheduling, text indexing and alignment, NGS data analysis

Message to students

My research interest is about database management. I have been working extensively on uncertain databases in the last few years, covering topics like uncertain data models, probabilistic queries, indexing structures, data cleaning, and data mining. Recently, I am also interested in cloud databases and information network. If you are strong in databases and algorithms, and you have passion in solving real-world problems, you are welcome to my group!

Research topics/projects

Uncertain databases, social network, cloud databases

Message to students

My research interests include real-time systems, transaction processing, information retrieval, data mining, data analysis, and big-data management --- basically anything that deals with large amounts of data. Currently, I am supervising/co-supervising 7 graduate students. Some of the research problems I am working on are related to social networks (such as Facebook), social tagging systems (such as Delicious and Flickr), and web search engines (such as Google). Other research problems are related to the processing and management of large sequence data (such as biological data). Previously, I have also worked on mining data with uncertainty.

Research topics/projects

Database, data mining, information retrieval

Message to students

Broadly speaking, my research is in the area of theoretical computer science. Specifically, my research interests span various topics in algorithmic game theory, differential privacy, and online algorithms. The main theme of my research is to develop the theory of computation in the presence of private data held by self-interested agents, using mathematical tools from computer science, economics, information theory, etc. If you are mathematically mature and enjoy solving hard algorithm problems, you might be interested in working with me (check my publications for more details).

Research topics/projects

Algorithms, Optimization, Game Theory, Privacy

Message to students

My research interests are in operating systems, programming languages, and distributed systems, with a particular focus on improving software reliability and security. I have been working on building effective tools to detect new harmful security bugs in widely used software (such as "useradd" in Linux) as well as building practical systems that can strengthen fault-tolerance of real-world applications. I admit 1 to 2 new PhD students every year. We constantly collaborate with faculty and students in CMU and Columbia University, and we publish in good systems conferences such as SOSP, OSDI, ASPLOS, and PLDI. You can contact me via email if you are a good systems hacker.

Research topics/projects

Operating systems, reliable and secure multi-threading, distributed systems, fault tolerance
