The School of Computing and Data Science (https://www.cds.hku.hk/) was established by the University of Hong Kong on 1 July 2024, comprising the Department of Computer Science and Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science.

Professor Reynold CHENG appeared in RTHK programme – 未來·無限 on 21 September, 2024.

Professor Reynold Cheng, Division Head of Computer Science, recently featured in a prominent radio programme. In the interview, he shared insights on his research in data science, focusing on high-performance algorithms for big data and artificial intelligence.

Professor Cheng discussed the uncertainties inherent in big data, such as inaccuracies and data loss, and highlighted the role of data scientists in ensuring reliable information extraction. He also explored the analysis of large-scale social media data, detailing his work in identifying key patterns and developing advanced algorithms.

A significant part of the discussion centred on his initiatives in the social welfare sector, particularly the idea of "Data Science for Social Good". He introduced the STAR Lab (Social Technology and Research Laboratory), which collaborates with NGOs such as The Jockey Club to create impactful solutions, including a cloud-based customer management system and the HIN Care (Heterogeneous Information Network)  mobile application.

Professor Cheng emphasised the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in utilising data science and AI effectively. He also highlighted the School's new programmes, which aim to produce skilled professionals equipped for future challenges.
